Bardavon/ UPAC Residency Programs

 

Big Bands Tribute: The Poughkeepsie HS Jazz Ensemble will take part in 6 master classes with professional musicians from the Tony Corbiscello Big Band. This residency culminates in a performance which includes both the HS Jazz Ensemble with the Tony Corbiscello Big Band on November 19, 2009 at 2pm.

4. Understanding the cultural dimensions and contributions of the arts.

 

IABAS Traditional Brazilian Band offers an uplifting introduction to Brazilian instruments and music. Two band members of this all-female ensemble share the art of instrument making, movement and traditional Brazilian music. The instruments are fabricated from recycled materials; students learn rhythms, movement and are introduced to Portuguese, the language of Brazil .

 

In Poughkeepsie Iabas musicians will work with 100 students from Warring Academy and Morse School. Students will bring their newly learned skills and instruments to the annual kickoff of the holiday season in Downtown Poughkeepsie, performing and marching in the Celebration of Lights Parade on December 3, 2010 at 6:30pm.

In Kingston Iabas musicians will work with 100 students from George Washington School.

Arm of the Sea Theatre The company is renowned for their work in creating giant puppets and their commitment to bringing environmental issues into focus. Patrick Wadden, the founder of Arm of the Sea Theatre, works with students to create puppets.

 

In Poughkeepsie 100 4th grade students at Clinton Elementary School will work with Patrick to create puppets and then perform with their beautiful creations bringing a touch of fantasy to the Celebration of Lights Parade on December 3, 2010 at 6:30pm .

In Kingston Arm of the Sea Theatre will work with 100 students from Chambers School.

Shakespeare's Clowns This two week residency introduces students to the works of Shakespeare. Teachers work with teaching artist Sean Patrick Fagan to select a scene from a Shakespearean play to be interpreted and presented in the style of contemporary circus clowns, featuring students performing feats characteristic of 16 th -17 th century jester-players (tumbling, juggling, stilt-walking, partnered acrobatics, etc.).

 

In Poughkeepsie 100 students from Columbus School bring their new skills and knowledge of Shakespeare to the Bardavon stage on January 21, 2011 at 7pm.

In Kingston 100 students from Sofie Finn School will be their skills to the UPAC stage on March 18, 2011 at 7pm.

The NYS Learning Standards of the English Language Arts include:

2. Relate new information to prior knowledge and experience
3. Understand and use the text features that make information accessible and usable, such as format, sequence, level of diction, relevance of details
4. Recognize different levels of meaning
5. Read aloud with expression, conveying the meaning and mood of a work
6. Write stories, poems, literary essays, and plays that observe the conventions of the genre and contain interesting and effective language and voice
7. Use standard English effectively

 

Hip Hop Theater Hip Hop Artist, Yako 440 & MTume , with his company Playback Theater NYC will work with teachers to develop a program based on a theme focused on curriculum. Students will be encouraged to get in touch with the rhythms of their bodies as well as explore the art of the spoken word. The basics of theater and storytelling from a performance context will be uncovered through their poetry and dance.

 

In Poughkeepsie students from Poughkeepsie Middle School and Columbus School will participate in this two week residency which will culminate with a performance at the Bardavon on March 19, 2010 at 7pm.

6. Read aloud with expression, conveying the meaning and mood of a work
7. Write stories, poems, literary essays, and plays that observe the conventions of the genre and contain interesting and effective language and voice
8. Use standard English effectively

 

The Young Playwrights Festival introduces students to every part of the theatrical creative process. Five and ten day residencies are available with Emmy nominated writer, Casey Kurtti.  Hudson Valley Philharmonic Residency Programs

 

Teaching artists work in classrooms to prepare students to successfully hear the marvelous pieces and thus feel the joy and revelation that makes people lifelong lovers of classical music. In the classroom, students are involved in musical activities that engage them in the artistic issues of each piece.

 

We also offer teachers workshops conducted by Juilliard teaching artists which will enable educators to take an active role in the process of drawing students into music and demonstrate ways they can use musical exploration to enhance other subjects they teach. A study guide & CD will be provided to educators.

 

The in-school assembly program will bring a small HVP ensemble to the school. This performance will reinforce the classroom activities emphasizing the theme that the full orchestral program will utilize in the concert hall performance.

Pick a Quintet - choose String, Woodwind, Brass or the Families Quintet (one member of each orchestral family) -HVP trained musicians/teaching artists will present a 50-minute program in your school. Each quintet program includes several short musical selections, which serve to illustrate the musician's stories and highlight basic musical concepts.

Peter & the Wolf -Russian composer, Serge Prokofiev, hoped that through this musical fable young listeners would learn to recognize the sounds of most of the orchestral instruments. Since its debut in 1936 it has become one of the best-loved compositions for children. The HVP Woodwind Quintet and narrator will perform this age-old favorite in your school.

Big & Little - The double bass (big) and violin (little) will talk to your students and transport them on a fascinating exploration of big and little, loud and soft, high and low, up and down. This program offers opportunities to help develop your students listening- skills, an expanded vocabulary and an ability to interpret musical sounds and expressions.
